W
Welt
This strip of cowhide is crucial to supporting men's shoe structure. The welt is usually 60 centimetres long and 3 centimetres wide. It holds the shaft, insole, and outsole together. On Goodyear-welted and double-stitched shoes, the welt is stitched to the ridge along the sides of the shoe, underneath the insole. This allows the welt to keep the outsole in place. On cheaply-made shoes, the welt often serves a merely decorative purpose.
