M
Metal Sheet
A roughly 10-centimetre-long and 1.5-millimetre-wide steel spring placed in the hollow between the welt and insole. Located between the heel and the ball of the foot, the metal sheet serves as reinforcement. Its shape echoes the curve of the sole, which lets it keep the foot in a stable position during motion, preventing the heel from wobbling.
Mid-outsole
A layer of soft leather that covers the insole. The side of the protective insole that touches the foot needs to be resistant to abrasion, discoloration, and perspiration. Proective insole length varies according to shoe type—the protective insole can cover either the entire insole, three-quarters of the insole, or one-fourth of the insole.
Monk Strap
A type of men's shoe with the same basic shaft cut as the Derby shoe. Monk shoes are known for featuring one or two straps running from either side of the shoe across the instep. Each strap is sealed with a buckle closure.
