Brief yet thorough definitions of important footwear terminology.
F
Filler
The filler consists of malleable material, such as cork or felt, that has been worked into the hollow between the insole and the midsole. As you walk in your shoes, the warmth and weight of your feet shape the filler, creating a personalized fit. The filler also muffles your tread and protects your feet from the heat and the cold.
Footbed
A type of insole. The footbed is an anatomically formed, removable insole that keeps your foot feeling comfortable inside your shoe while supporting your arch. It consists of a single layer of needle felt and foam. Footbeds are available in various thicknesses and help maintain wearing comfort.
Front
Another term for the vamp—the part of the upper at the front of the shoe.
Full Brogue
A type of men's shoe with decorative perforation on the wing cap and along the edges of the shaft pieces.
