C
Closed Lacing
On shoes with closed lacing, the frontmost part of the shaft lies on top of the side pieces, which limits the extent to which the lacing can be widened. This creates a neat and elegant look. Oxfords and other types of shoes with closed lacing are discreet in appearance - only the upper edge of the tongue is visible.
Chrome Tanning
The tanning method most commonly used to create leather for uppers. Chrome salts are used during the process to make the leather extremely resistant to tearing.
Counter
A piece of leather attached at the spot where the lining and outer shaft connect at the back of the shoe. The counter provides reinforcement and serves as a continuation of the heel, keeping the foot firmly in place inside the shoe and leading and supporting the foot during motion. It also maintains the shape of the back of the shoe.
